Kansas City Parks and Recreation is now an official sponsoring host agency of Special Olympics, Missouri and is recruiting athletes of all skill levels to compete on the inaugural KC Parks Special Olympics Basketball Team. Eligible athletes should be at least 8 years of age and have an intellectual disability.
“We view our sponsorship as the opportunity to help close the gap of available programming for young persons with intellectual disabilities in our city,” says KC Parks Special Olympics Coordinator Jordan Brown. “This is meaningful for our department as we strive to live our mission of improving the quality of life, health and wellness of our community by providing socially equitable, community-driven programming and environmentally sound natural resource management.”
The team will travel to Belton on January 6, 2018 for the annual Special Olympics Missouri Basketball Tournament. Practices leading up to the tournament will be held once-a-week, after school at Garrison Community Center, 1124 E. Fifth St., KCMO 64106. Transportation from school to practice and to and from the tournament can be provided. Uniforms will be supplied to all athletes. Special Olympics is a registration free program.
