Volunteers are needed to help survey new fountains and sculptures in the Metro. On Friday May 7th and Saturday, May 8th, from 9 – 11 a.m., members of the Kansas City Adopt a Monument committee will show volunteers how to measure, photograph and document new public art. The upside-down Shuttlecock on the north lawn of the Nelson-Atkins is the location for each session.
Paul Benson, retired Nelson-Atkins conservator, will conduct the training. Volunteers with NAMA membership may park free in the garage and other parking is available on Oak or on neighboring streets. Following the training, volunteers can select from a list of other public art to survey on their own or as a team. Once the three-page surveys are complete, they will be sent to the Smithsonian and placed on their American Art website in the Art Inventories catalogue.
Kansas City Adopt A Monument, a committee of the City of Fountains Foundation, was founded in 1994 and periodically surveys and photographs recently installed fountains and sculptures in the five-county metropolitan area. Volunteers are needed to complete surveys of over 125 new pieces of public art.
