Trailside Center Program: A New Novel by Millie B. Mehnert-The Savages of Yellowstone

Event Navigation

Thursday, February 4
7 p.m.
Trailside Center, 9901 Holmes Road

RESCHEDULED FROM 1/21/16: This novel features young workers, called savages, and their place in the history of Yellowstone. It is based on a true story as told from the inside out by a former savage who worked there during the momentous summer of 1959 in the park. The savage name is a part of Yellowstone’s important history, probably dating from the late 1800s. It is believed to be a choice of the young workers, chosen out of respect for the prowess of Indians who inhabited the park before them. The story captures the essence of the park’s surroundings during the 50s with an easy flow of dialogue, and with daring and sometimes dangerous activities.  The time follows two major wars, when the park’s focus is on a long overdue infrastructure project called Mission 66.
