Event Navigation

African American Heritage Trail of Kansas City

Tuesday, February 25, 2020
5:30-6:30 p.m.
Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Blue Parkway

The City of Kansas City, Mo is launching the African American Heritage Trail and YOU are invited to join us as we reveal the site and recognize all who helped us create it!

Over the past year, the African American Heritage Trail of Kansas City, Mo. (AAHTKC) was created through community meetings, community input, and lots of research. AAHTKC.ORG is the result of this work, but it is only Phase 1. The Trail will continue to be a living, evolving, dynamic project built through the power of the community.

Project representatives will highlight the trail site at AAHTKC.ORG and how you can share content to include on the website! We will then feature a presentation from local filmmaker Nicholas Wiggins who will discuss his recently released documentary “Land of Opportunity” that sheds light on the fight for housing rights in the historic Santa Fe neighborhood. And we’ll hear from filmmaker Megan Voepel who is also creating a documentary related to KCMO’s African American History. This project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, State Historic Preservation Office.
