On Earth Day, April 22, 2022, KC Parks in coordination with other City Departments engaged in The Great Kansas City Cleanup.
More than 500 volunteers participated in 25 parks and boulevard cleanups throughout the City in celebration of Earth Day. In total, volunteers served more than 1,200 hours, collected 5,000 pounds of litter, recycled 200 pounds of glass, and removed several truckloads of invasive brush. Their service is valued at $33,000.
An enormous thank you is due to all the KC Parks Ambassadors who were integral to the planning, preparation, execution, and success of this citywide cleanup event, especially those who took time off of work to serve as site leaders.
“Many of the Earth Day cleanups were led by KC Parks Ambassadors,” says KC Parks Director Chris Cotten. “We appreciate these volunteers who care for our shared spaces year-round and encourage everyone to get involved. Let’s make it Earth Day, every day in Kansas City!”
We also want to acknowledge the tremendous contributions of City staff who volunteered at the cleanup and those involved in planning and coordinating the event. In addition, the maintenance crews with KC Parks and Public Works Solid Waste Division both deserve special recognition for their continued commitment to keeping our City clean, and their extraordinary service removing additional litter and brush on Earth Day.
